Description
Key Characteristics –
• Intermediate – Hard Species (Cannot climb smooth surfaces and rerequire a diapause/ Hibernation)
• Medium Mantis- Adult females up to 7/8 cm, males also around 7/8.
• Golden Brown to a vibrant green and pink shade, This unusual species blends into the wind bushes high in the spanish mountains.
• Fascinating to observe. Tolerant of correct handling. Always handle cautiously and never leave a child alone with a mantis.
• These will thrive on large fruitflies and then green/bluebottle flies, Moths and Butterflies. They will only eat Flying Prey. They do not require a feeding schedule as a thinner abdomen will indicate hunger and a satiated mantis will look plump. Mantis can comfortably hunt prey up to 50% their body length.
Environment for this species-
• Conehead Mantises are best kept at 30-35C, allowing for a slight drop during the night. They will also require a diapause around i6 dropping to around 15/16c for 4-5 months warming to feed which would replicate the winter months in spain.
• They require a humidity of around 50-60%. This can be achieved by misting only very lightly once a week to offer a drink with either spring water or tap water treated with our Hydropure solution. A thermometer/hygrometer is advisable for monitoring these levels.
• They will drink from the droplets of moisture in their enclosure, separate water is unnecessary.
• All mantis require an enclosure at least 3x as tall as they are long and should take into consideration this species cannot climb so will require meshed sides if in a Acrylic Enclosure or a pop up butterfly net is ideal. This is to allow ample space for molting so please bear this in mind when adding décor to enclosures.
