Texas Unicorn Mantis – Pseudovates Chlorophea

Key Characteristics –

• Ideal for beginners.

• Medium mantis – Adult females around 7-8cm, males similar size although more slender

• Mostly green/ gold– From bright greens leaf like wings and golden body. Juveniles have a stick like appearence with their golden body and horn on their head they get their common name Unicorn mantis although in fact it is actually 2 horns on their head which appear as one

• Fascinating to observe they have a unique stance with one arm raised as if they are doing a “karate chop”. Great feeders but will only take flying prey normally.

Tolerant of correct handling. Always handle cautiously and never leave a child alone with a mantis. Adult males of this species are prone to flight, adult females are not.

• Under no circumstances should these be kept communally despite some reports of successful communal keeping it does not work in small spaces.

• These will thrive on large fruitflies and then green/bluebottle flies, moths after the 3rd Instar. They do not require a feeding schedule as a thinner abdomen will indicate hunger and a satiated mantis will look plump. Mantis can comfortably hunt prey up to 50% their body length.

Environment for this species-

• Texas Unicorn Mantis are best kept at 26-29C, allowing for a slight drop during the night they live in hedge wind bushes in the Texan desert.

• They require a humidity of around 50-60%. This can be achieved by misting less regular only offering a light mist for a drink every few days with either spring water or tap water treated with our Hydropure solution. A thermometer/hygrometer is advisable for monitoring these levels.

• They will get their moisture from food separate water is unnecessary although as stated a light mist can be offered every few days if required.

• All mantis require an enclosure at least 3x as tall as they are long. This is to allow ample space for molting so please bear this in mind when adding décor to enclosures.
