Description
Vietnamese Dead Leaf – (Deroplatys Gorochovi)
1x Unsexed Nymph
Key Characteristics –
• Ideal for beginners/intermediate.
• Medium/large mantis – Adult females up to 9cm, males usually 7-8cm.
• Adult females have a wide shield/prothorax which provides camouflage, hence the name. The males are much narrower with a slender shield/prothorax. The females wings reach the bottom of the abdomen, whereas the males wings extend around 1cm further.
• Vietnamese Dead Leafs are found in various shades of brown, with some being much darker than others.
• If threatened they can either feign death to avoid confrontation or perform a very impressive deimatic display. This is when the mantis will reveal its front and hind wings, presenting deep orange, black and white patterns designed to confuse and intimidate predators. They will also raise their raptors to expose the sharp spines.
• Aggressive hunters, yet curious and inquisitive towards humans. Tolerant of correct handling. Always handle cautiously and never leave a child alone with a mantis. Adult males of this species are highly prone to flight, adult females are not.
• Under no circumstances should these be kept communally.
• These will thrive on large fruitflies and then green/bluebottle flies, roaches, locusts and moths after the 4th Instar. They do not require a feeding schedule as a thinner abdomen will indicate hunger and a satiated mantis will look plump. Mantis can comfortably hunt prey up to 50% their body length.
Environment for this species-
• Giant Dead Leaf mantis are best kept at 22-26C, allowing for a slight drop during the night.
• They require a humidity of around 70-80%. This can be achieved by spraying with either spring water or tap water treated with our Hydropure solution. A thermometer/hygrometer is advisable for monitoring these levels, and a good quality substrate will help maintain humidity.
• They will drink from the droplets of moisture in their enclosure, separate water is unnecessary.
• All mantis require an enclosure at least 3x as tall as they are long. This is to allow ample space for molting so please bear this in mind when adding décor to enclosures.
