FAQ'S About Jumping Spiders

What do jumping spiders eat? How should I feed mine?

Jumping spiders are carnivorous arachnids that primarily consume insects and other arachnids. Explore our jumping spider food bundle, which includes a wide selection of popular live foods. In captivity, young spiderlings are typically fed D. Hydeii fruit flies, and as they grow, they can transition to waxworms, mealworms, blue/green bottle flies, and almost any insect they are willing to eat.

Each jumping spider has its own unique personality. Some may be bold, going after larger, more active prey, while others may prefer smaller, less active insects. We suggest experimenting with different sizes and types of live food to determine your spider’s preferences. The healthiest feeder insects for jumping spiders include flies, crickets, locusts, and other fully developed bugs. Grubs like waxworms and mealworms are high in fat but lower in protein, making them ideal as occasional treats.

My Pet Jumping Spider Just Arrived, Whats next?

Congratulations on your new pet! Now that your jumping spider has arrived, there are a few important steps to ensure a smooth transition and a happy, healthy spider.

Carefully open the package and gently transfer your spider into its new enclosure. Avoid sudden movements and loud noises, as this can stress your spider.

Make sure your spider’s enclosure is properly set up with ample space for climbing, a secure lid, and plenty of ventilation. Provide hiding spots using materials like cork bark or leaves to help your spider feel secure.

Offer fresh water by lightly misting one side of the enclosure. Jumping spiders drink water droplets, so this is essential for their hydration.

Wait at least 24 hours before offering food to allow your spider to acclimate to its new environment. Once settled, you can introduce small insects like fruit flies or pinhead crickets, depending on your spider’s size.

Spend some time observing your spider from outside the enclosure to get to know its behavior. This will help you understand its needs and detect any signs of stress or illness early on.

It may take a few days for your spider to fully adjust to its new home. Give it time and space, and soon you’ll be able to enjoy watching its fascinating behaviors.

How do i care for jumping spiders? Are they easy to care for?

Jumping spiders are relatively easy to care for, making them great pets for beginners and experienced keepers alike. To care for your jumping spider, provide a well-ventilated enclosure with plenty of climbing space and a secure lid. Use materials like cork bark, plants, or leaves to create hiding spots.

Feed your spider small live insects, such as fruit flies or crickets, depending on its size. Fresh water should be offered by lightly misting the enclosure every few days. Maintaining a temperature between 70-80°F (21-27°C) with moderate humidity will keep your spider healthy.

Overall, jumping spiders are low-maintenance pets that thrive with simple care routines and basic attention to their needs.

Do jumping spiders make good pets?

Yes, jumping spiders make excellent pets! They are fascinating creatures known for their curious and interactive behavior. Unlike many other spiders, they recognize and respond to their owners, making them more engaging.

Jumping spiders are also low-maintenance, requiring simple enclosures and a diet of small live insects. Their compact size and relatively easy care requirements make them ideal for both beginners and experienced pet owners. If you’re looking for a unique, entertaining, and manageable pet, a jumping spider is a great choice!

Can jumping Spiders be kept together?

Jumping spiders, known for their curious and agile nature, can be fascinating pets. However, keeping them together in the same enclosure requires careful consideration of their natural behaviors and needs. Generally, it is not recommended to house multiple jumping spiders in a single habitat, as these arachnids are inherently territorial and may exhibit aggressive behaviors towards one another.

In the wild, jumping spiders are solitary creatures that establish their own territories. When kept together in captivity, they may perceive each other as competitors, leading to stress and potential conflicts. This territoriality can result in one spider attacking or preying on another, which can be detrimental to their health and well-being.

If you’re interested in observing multiple jumping spiders, it’s best to provide each spider with its own separate enclosure. This approach ensures that each spider has ample space and reduces the risk of aggression or stress. Additionally, individual enclosures allow you to monitor each spider’s health and behavior more effectively. By keeping your jumping spiders separate, you can create a safer and more harmonious environment for these captivating arachnids.

For those who are keen on maintaining multiple jumping spiders, consider using small, well-ventilated containers or terrariums to house each spider individually. Ensure that each enclosure mimics the spider’s natural habitat, providing appropriate hiding spots and food sources. This setup will help maintain the spiders’ well-being and allow you to enjoy their unique behaviors without the risks associated with cohabitation.

About Jumping Spiders

We are proud to be trusted UK based breeders of many different species of Jumping Spider. These fascinating little creatures have adapted well to captivity and make great pets.

Jumping Spiders have captured the hearts of many, and are often seen as a gateway to ‘curing’ arachnophobia. With their huge eyes and often pensive demeanour, it’s easy to see why!

With around 6000 species currently (and more being found!) these spiders make up a massive percentage of the arachnid world.

The scientific name for the jumping spider family is Salticidae. With so many species, it’s no surprise that jumping spiders vary widely in appearance, habitat and preferred prey. The largest, Hyllus giganteus, can be 0.98 inches (2.5 centimeters) in length, while smaller species, like the colorful Habronattus pyrrithrix, range from 0.19 to 0.3 inches (5 to 8 millimeters) in length.

Our most popular ones are Phiddipus Regius (Regal Jumper) and Phiddipus Ardens (Widow Jumper)

If in doubt, we are happy to answer questions and we offer bundle deals so you can be assured that you are buying the right enclosure for your new friend!

Care Information

Care is relatively straightforward, they require a fully ventilated enclosure with a layer of substrate to hold humidity, plenty of hiding places and things to climb & create webs on. A front opening enclosure works best because top opening can destroy the webs they’ve made.
